Gravesite of Janis Rainis

Pictures and text by Mark R. Hatlie

These pictures were taken in Riga during the first week of September, 2007. This gravesite forms the centerpiece of the cemetery named after Rainis, Raina kapi. There is also a memorial to Rainis down town.

This picture is taken from right next to the memorial to martyred pagans.

The inscription reads along the top, "And I rise up strongly up toward the sun" (Un specigs celsos es pret sauli augsa).

.
During the Soviet period, the prominent grave plots around the ring surrounding Rainis' grave were given to high-ranking Soviet military personnel.
