Ruins of former synagogue and memorial to Zanis Lipke

Pictures and text by Mark R. Hatlie

These pictures were taken in Riga during the first week of September, 2007. The ruins show what is left of the former Jewish synagogue in Riga after its destruction on July 4th, 1941, only three days after the fall of the city to the German army. The large white memorial is dedicated to Zanis Lipke, a man credited with having saved many Jews from the Nazis.

This is an older picture taken in 1999 on the anniversary of the event. The man is a Jewish survivor who fought with the Soviet Army and then returned to live in Riga after the war.

The visit to this location was paid for by a research grant from the
American Public University System.
