Cemetery for German prisoners of war in Riga

Pictures and text by Mark R. Hatlie

These pictures were taken in Riga during the first week of September, 2007. This cemetery was rennovated and is maintained by the German war graves commission. It is located on the edge of the Lielie kapi park.

The sign reads "German soldiers' cemetery Riga 1939-1945" in German and Latvian. Why it starts with 1939 and not 1941 remains a mystery.
"Here lie 433 German soldiers of the Second World War. Remember them and the dead of all wars" (Hier ruhen 433 deutsche Soldaten des Zweiten Weltkrieges. Gedenket ihrer und der Toten aller Kriege).

The visit to this location was paid for by a research grant from the
American Public University System.
"Educating those who serve."
