Pictures and text by Mark R. Hatlie
These pictures were taken in Riga during the first week of September, 2007. This long, narrow section of the cemetery is the main alley from the entrance past the grave of Vilis Lacis to the gravesite of the first Latvian president. During the communist period, the section was reserved for communist graves and the view of the former president's gravesite was blocked with trees.
The graves here are notable for their uniformity and austerity compared with most of the graves in the rest of the cemetery.

This is the view from president Cakste's gravesite and memorial. | |
This is the view in the same direction, past the communist graves, looking toward the cemetery entrance. |
The visit to this location was paid for by a research grant from the American Public University System. "Educating those who serve." |
