Memorials and mass graves at Bikernieki Forest in Riga

Pictures and text by Mark R. Hatlie

These pictures were taken in Riga during the first week of September, 2007. Bikerinieki forest out near the edge of Riga was the scene of numerous executions of Jews and others during the Nazi occupation of 1941-1944. The mass graves are located in two groups at different places in the forest. The photos listed here under "main site" (first) show the main memorial complex which is right off the road that cuts through the forest from the northwest to the southeast. The "second site" (here) is located on the other side of the road, almost due north, deep inside the forest, centered on the Bakas kalns hill. The secondary site is not marked on recent city maps. On older maps from the 1990s, it is marked, but it is too far south on the map. Go to the Bakas kalns hill and you will find it.
