Gravesite of Russian Prisoners of War in Marburg

Pictures and text by Mark R. Hatlie

These pictures were taken on 13 Februrary, 2006 in the main city cemetery in Marburg.

At the time of year I went, the gravesite is identifiable solely by the cemetery broschure. There is no sign marking the site and all but one of the stones was covered in snow.
The flat, square stones were barely-visible, ghostly shadows in the frost. I counted about 16 stones.

The gravestone of one Vassily Zenkino was under a tree, so it was still barely visible. But even here, the frost froze to the moss, rendering the other information illegible.
