Picture by Katharina Uhl, text by Mark R. Hatlie
This picture was taken in April of 2006 in Kaliningrad, formerly Koenigsburg. The marker memorializes a Soviet submarine commander from the Second World War who is famous for having sunk a German ship carrying between 6,000 and 9,000 people. Read the Wikipedia article here.
As the photographer noted, the flowers and wreaths indicate that the memorial is still very much in use. It is located at the city quay. |
