Cemetery section for concentration camp dead in the Southwest Cemetery in Essen

Pictures and text by Mark R. Hatlie

These pictures were taken on 10 June, 2007 in the Südwestfriedhof in Essen. This section is actually a part of the larger complex of German war dead.

The sign reads, "Here were buried after 1945 citizens of Essen who had been killed between 1933 and 1945 for political or ideological reasons." (Hier wurden nach 1945 Essener Bürger beigesetzt, die zwischen 1933 und 1945 aus politischen oder ideologischen Gründen in den Konzentrationslagern umgebracht worden waren.)
Here is a view from the graves looking down on the other German war dead.

The visit to this location was paid for by a research grant from the
American Public University System.
