Pictures and text by Mark R. Hatlie
These pictures were taken on 10 June, 2007 in the Parkfriedhof in Essen. This is a section of the cemetery off to the right side (from the entrance) near the Jewish cemetery.
The main stone reads in Russian and German "Here lie 213 Soviet citizens who died in German emprisonment, 1941-1945." The Russian text refers to it as "fascist" emprisonment.
The gravestones are in German only. Many are labelled "unknown."
They list names and dates of birth and death.
The stones along the edge are overgrown with moss.
The visit to this location was paid for by a research grant from the American Public University System. "Educating those who serve."
