Memorial urns for local members of the Fédération Internationale des Résistants and prominent communists at Heidefriedhof in Dresden

Pictures and text by Mark R. Hatlie

These pictures were taken on 24 October, 2008 and on February 13, 2009. The snowy pictures are from the more recent February) date. This memorial complex was built during the communist period.

If you walk straight ahead from the entrance to the cemetery, this soon becomes visible on the right.
.
The obelisk shows the logo of the Fédération Internationale des Résistants - the International Federation of Resistance Fighters.
The wall reads, "Having strived to reach the pinnacle of humanity" ("Zum höchsten der Menschheit emporgestrebt")
.
To the right from the main path, before the obelisk, there is a a long alleyway.
All along this alleyway, near the path or tucked back behind the bushes, there are walls which show the names of deceased FIR members from Dresden. Their urns are buried here.

After some distance, larger grave markers come into view. These are probably prominent local communists.
.
For example. Max Zimmerling was an author and co-founder of the Union of Proletarian-Revolutionary Authors.
.
.
Paul Gruner was a member of the German Communist Party.

The long, straight pathway then enters into the round, ceremonial area, which is part of the burial and memorial area for the air raid dead.
