Cemetery sections for war dead from the Second World War in Bochum

Pictures and text by Mark R. Hatlie

These pictures were taken on 10 June, 2007 in the main cemetery in Bochum.

The cross and the first section of war dead graves are quite prominent. They are among the first things the cemetery visiter sees when coming from the entrance into the cemetery.
.
The wreaths express "love and thanks."
.
.
The graves here are military dead from the Second World War. These include many civilians, perhaps victims of the bombing.
.
.
On the other side of the wall, there are more such graves on both sides, along the paths going left and right.
.
.
The main section of war dead comes just after - a long central axis going down the middle of the cemetery with rows of gravestones along both sides.
.
.
.
.
.
The Kleyer family was hit hard, perhaps wiped out. This would appear to be the parents and a daughter.
The Göbels as well. This may be a mother and two daughters.
.
.
Over in the other, older section of the cemetery across the street, "Altenbochum," there is a small section with more war dead.

The visit to this location was paid for by a research grant from the
American Public University System.
"Educating those who serve."
