These pictures were taken on June 19, 2006 on the Washington Mall. This monument cannot
be adequately captured on film, at least not on a small screen. It is much, much bigger
than it looks on the photographs.

On this one, the change in color about a third of the way up is visible. That marks
the spot where constrution was interrupted for several decades in the 19th century.
When I took this shot, I was standing right next to a woman trying to do the same thing.
I wonder whose shot turned out better?
